Anastasia Yip

Bio

Anastasia Yip is a multidisciplinary artist in Oakland. Originally trained in illustration, she ventured into acrylic, oil, and watercolor. She grew up in Hong Kong where she was heavily influenced by the “East meets West” culture. She seeks to express a different point of view from the status quo, where voices of women and BIPOC are underrepresented. Her most recent exhibit was part of "Bandung to the Bay: Intersections of Solidarity" at the Oakland Asian Cultural Center.

Artist Statement

The paintings included in this exhibition are part of a project that explores the idea of “belonging” in two cultures. In this series, you’ll find Chinese Zodiac animals in Asian-American settings and American symbols within Chinese proverbs or landscape paintings.
Playing Qin to a Cow is a Chinese proverb: no matter how good the musician is, the cow cannot understand or appreciate the music. The dairy cow, alongside a goddess-like musician in the same frock as the cattle, signify the futile efforts in changing views on climate change and misogyny.
Tiger in Chrysanthemums juxtaposes the fierceness and strength of the tiger with flowers that are used to show respect for ancestors and the dead in Chinese culture.
Hungry Hungry Dragon explores the influence of Chinese cuisine over mainstream American culture and the commodification of traditionally revered symbols in the diaspora.
